Hopefully there are still some of you out there in cyber land that check up on Logan with his site to read this!
Logan gave mommy a pretty bad scare on memorial day that led to a nighttime trip to the emergency room.
To set the scene...mommy and Logan along with some friends went swimming and had a blast (update coming soon, hopefully with pictures and video of Logan's swimming times). Then, we all ate dinner together and played. Before bed, we needed to clean ourselves off, so Logan suggested he take a "really fast shower", which essentially means taking a shower in mommy's bathroom. So, that's what he and mommy did. It was about 9:15pm.
All went well until after the water was turned off. Mommy knows there was a specific trigger but can't remember exactly what it was, but suddenly Logan darted for the door, which isn't much because it isn't a super large shower (but WAY bigger than the mobile home!!!). Unfortunately, as can be expected, Logan slipped and fell after the quick dart. There weren't many places to go from there, except down into the metal water catcher thing on the bottom of the door...right into his head. He immediately screamed, which is a good sign with a head injury like that. He was face down.
Mommy knew when she picked him up this wouldn't be good. As she turned him around to comfort him she could see what happened. The metal part of the door cut into his eyelid, right at the browbone. There was a fairly deep gash about 5/8" long. Logie had just missed the corner of the metal going into his eye by 1/8 of an inch or so.
Mommy felt extremely panicked but knew she had to keep it together to calm Logie and take care of him without scaring him. It wasn't too bloody...she expected more blood. Mommy is a bit cautious when it comes to medical/injury concerns, so her immediate reaction was that she would need to take him into the hospital, but wasn't sure and didn't know who to call to get reassurance either way. So there was an awkward minute or two where she had to decide what to do first...get dressed? Call daddy? find a bandage? Get ice? Call the dr on call? (It was 9:30pm on Memorial Day!). Hold Logie? So many things to decide.
Here's what ended up happening. Mommy initially held Logan until he was mostly comforted (didn't take long), wrapped Logie in a towel, then gave him a towel to hold on his head to slow the bleeding. She then called daddy to get his advice; they decided it would be good to call the dr on call due to the "gaping" nature of the wound. While waiting for the dr to call back from the page, mommy got Logan dressed in his batman pajamas and then got dressed herself. The dr. called and agreed that although the size wasn't HUGE and it wasn't bleeding too bad, because it was splitting and because it was above his eye he needed to go to the hospital. Mommy got Logan's spiderman ice pack and headed to the car. While getting ready to leave she called both neighbors she knew were awake to check to see if they had any of those butterfly bandage things that hold the wounds close to prevent it from gaping anymore. The nearest hospital is at least a 10-15 minute drive away. At some point mommy called daddy again to let him know the status and he volunteered to meet at the hospital from work (not a quick drive!) to be there for Logie and mommy.
It was memorial day night. Although Lake Pointe is not the busiest hospital, any hospital on memorial day night will have some wait. We arrived a little after 10pm and waited about 45 minutes to be called back. Logan was in good spirits by then. When Logan was eventually called back he insisted on being called batman. Daddy arrived while we were in triage and we eventually were put in a room.
A few nurses came in, one to prep the wound kit and another to provide a "batman mask" consisting of a cotton ball with numbing medication and tape. They are so smart. Mommy loves this hospital because they are not so busy that they take time to take care of the patient. Logan told that nurse not to worry because Jesus was healing his booboo. That made mommy and daddy smile. That nurse thought he'd need 1-2 stitches.
When the dr. came in he said the wound was not gaping anymore. In the wait it had closed up enough that it was no longer gaping. However, due to the location in the crease of his eyelid it was unlikely to heal very well on its own, particularly because Logan is so young it would be nearly impossible to keep him from moving or touching the area to let it heal well. He said he didn't use glue very often, but in this case it was warranted. Logan was very good getting the glue applied and letting it dry. After paying the bill we were all on our way!
Daddy went back to work to prove to his friends he would. Mommy and Logan returned home to all the chores that mommy had planned to finish that night and went to bed. Logan was allowed to sleep in mommy's bed that night because of the traumatic night. All was well.
Logan wasn't able to go swimming for a few days, but other than that was able to return to normal the next day. Over the next few days the wound looked GREAT as if it was completely healed, but as the swelling went down the cut became more apparent. It is still there, and it appears there will be a lasting scar. Daddy has one in the mirror-image of the same spot, so they are just alike now, and Logan thinks its cool. Daddy thinks its cool too.
In all the haste to get out of the house to the dr, mommy DID remember to stop and take a picture. What she didn't remember to do, or hasn't had the time to do, is take the picture and download it so she can upload it anywhere else. Hopefully that will happen soon and she can add it to this site.
Happy June everyone.
Kindest Regards,
